Veterinary assistants provide all types of animal care for veterinary offices, clinics, boarding facilities and shelters. This is a great entry level program for anyone seeking to start a career working with animals and their humans. Vet assistants are responsible for keeping animals clean and safe. They are often the first point of contact for clients and as such set the tone for their veterinary experience. This first course combines lecture, theory and instructor-led labs in class and on-site at professional locations. Please note that students are responsible for their own transportation to off campus locations. Access to the Internet is required as some classes are conducted online. Only those students who successfully complete this course are eligible to take the Veterinary Assistant Externship course.
PREREQUISITES: High school/state diploma, postsecondary diploma, certificate or transcript.
NAVTA CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of the Vet Assistant and Externship courses are required for students who wish to become National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA). Earning this title requires students to pass the Veterinary Assistant Course and complete a minimum 100-hour externship at an appropriate and agreeable facility. Completers then may sit for the NAVTA exam which is administered on our campus. Only those who complete both courses and pass the NAVTA exam go on to become an Approved Veterinary Assistant. Those who achieve successful program completion and AVA status may be eligible to earn advanced standing at Bergen Community College’s Veterinary Technical Program.
